Thomas LEDGER

Thomas came from Rotherham, Yorkshire with his Mother, Father and five other brothers and sister, to Nottingham between 1790 and 1794. He was apprenticed in 1799 to Samuel Culley (Framework Knitter) when he was fourteen years old. The following indenture shows the terms of his apprenticeship: Thomas Ledger: Son of Thomas Ledger of Wollaton in the County of Nottingham, of his own free will and accord. Put to apprenticeship by indenture of apprenticeship dated 4 Day of October 1799, to Samuel Culley of the town of Nottingham, Framework Knitter. His executor and administrator for 7 years from the day of the date, thereof. The consideration being one penny. He was not yet out of his apprenticeship period when he married Elizabeth Culley, his Master's daughter on March 21, 1803. She was only sixteen and he was eighteen when they married at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham. There is no evidence to suggest the marriage was forced due to pregnancy as the couple's first child was not born until June 3, 1804. Following his apprenticeship, Thomas became a Burgess by Servitude of the City of Nottingham, which allowed him to ply his trade and vote.
