Samuel SMITH

Private 9727 1st Btn Notts & Derby Rgt. Sherwood Foresters was a Regular Soldier, probably se rving in India when the First World War started.
He would have been recalled to England for retraining in preparation to be sent to France & Flanders, and this culminated in arrival in F & F to relieve the BEF 5th November 1914, one d ay before Samuel SMITH died 'of wounds' in Chatham Military Hospital, Kent.
New info on his service came with a download from National Archives of his medal card, showed him as service no 9727 2nd Btn Notts & Derby, not 1st., & a disembarkation date of 8th Sept. 1914.
This means he was a part of the BEF, and 'over there' earlier than realised.
"The 2nd Battalion was part of the British Expeditionary Force which landed in France in
September 1914 and went straight into the bitter fighting on the
Aisne. On 20 September (the anniversary of the Battle of the Alma
-
a previous Battle Honour of the 95th) the Battalion carried out
a counter-attack to plug a gap in the British Lines. The casualties
were almost identical with those at the Alma; 17 out of 22 officers
and 214 out of 930 other ranks. Reinforced, the Battalion fought
another major battle in October at Ennettiere on the way to Ypres,
holding a vastly superior German force for 48 hours and losing in
the process 16 officers and 710 other ranks."
If he received his wounds 'over there' (as part of the 1st), it's not clear how he died only one day later in Blighty, but makes sense as part of the 2nd.
His Widow, Ada, supported their son Samuel William with help from family, until her Brother-in-Law Charles was de-mobbed in 1918, when they married at All Souls Church in Radford Notting ham, the same Church she married Charles's brother Samuel in 1913.
